Forgoing my normal morning bike ride at six o’clock and the terror of Phuket’s daily road mayhem, one recent chilly and misty dawn, I found myself wolfing down a bacon and egg roll and coffee at a little Rose Bay café on the southern foreshore of Sydney Harbour. Nothing unusual about that you might say, until you notice that I’m wearing waterproof shorts and a spray jacket and that my knees are knocking uncontrollably together.

A roundtable discussion aimed at combatting the consumption and trade of dog and cat meat was convened by Soi Dog Foundation International and social and behaviour change science agency ‘Intelligentmedia’ with the National Assembly of Viet Nam last week. The event brought together nearly 50 parliamentarians, government officials and specialists from across Vietnamese society to tackle the serious and urgent issue.

PHUKET: The family and friends of Daniel Andreiev, a 10-year-old Ukrainian boy who survived drowning in Phuket on May 2, have extended their heartfelt gratitude to all supporters after medics in Bangkok confirmed the boy’s return to Phuket tomorrow (July 7). Still in a coma, Daniel shows steady progress in recovery, making his mother Liudmyla believe in a man-made miracle by the Thai doctors along with Thai and foreign supporters who keep donating money to bring her son back to life.

Phuket-based Soi Dog Foundation, whose stray animal CNVR programme (Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return) is the largest of its kind in the world, has endorsed the recent announcement by Department of Disease Control Director General Dr Tares Kassanairawiwong of the intention to work together with the Department of Livestock Development and the Department of Local Administration towards making Phuket the first rabies-free province in Thailand.
