Your Air Conditioner Could Save a Bird’s Life
Phuket Life

Saturday 9 May 2026 01:00 PM
Birds are not decorative extras in the urban frame. They are part of the mechanism that keeps urban nature functioning, helping hold the balance between insects, seeds, pollination and the fragile web of biodiversity that still survives between roads, towers and heat-soaked concrete. In Thailand, where extreme urban heat is becoming a sharper public issue, that warning suddenly feels urgent, not theoretical.

Here in Phuket there are some great places to experience the natural world, some well known and others not so. Not only the national parks, mangroves and jungle areas, there are so many beaches, islands, coves and bays all teeming with life. Yes, we all know the main tourists locations that we see advertised everywhere, such as Maya Bay, James Bond Island, Pileh Lagoon and the Similan Islands, and yes, these are well known and part of the must see, bucket list places when in Phuket.

Tracing Phuket wildlife to the Jurassic era

An innocent photo taken of a bird in my back yard recently prompted childhood memories of studying dinosaurs at school, leaving me curious whether any species currently present in Phuket could be traced back to the Jurassic period.

The Compost Bank: Tackling Phuket’s food waste
Phuket Life

Saturday 14 February 2026 02:00 PM
The Compost Bank is a sustainable waste management initiative focused on redirecting organic waste away from landfills and transforming it into valuable resources for Phuket. While the island faces a growing waste challenge driven by high volumes and mixed waste streams, the main barrier to effective waste management is not awareness, but infrastructure – specifically, the lack of systems to properly process organic waste.

Dissociation from nature and how to reconnect

Sunday 30 November 2025 11:00 AM
Phuket is one of the most beautiful islands in the world, yet every day its beauty faces a momentous challenge… litter. We see it on the roadside, on our beaches, outside shops and piled up right next to the bin. It doesn’t come from bad people, it comes from habits. From disconnection. From when we forget that what we drop doesn’t disappear, it just becomes someone else’s problem.

Phuket’s mounting waste management problems have come under renewed focus after the island failed to secure a place in this year’s national ‘Clean Province’ Community Waste Management Awards ‒ a stark contrast to last year’s third-place finish among small provinces.

Phuket, Thailand – November 8, 2025 - More than 100 volunteers came together on Saturday morning for a major beach clean-up at Nai Yang Beach, following days of heavy rain and a typhoon that left the shoreline covered in debris and washed-up waste. Here in Phuket, we are accustomed to seeing the glittering, flawless façade of luxury tourism. But step just a few streets away, into the heart of the island’s older, poorer, or underinvested communities, and you see another reality: pockets of neglect. A discarded fishing net here, a pile of unmanaged waste there, a public space overgrown and forgotten.
Exploring Natural Phuket in Green Season

Environment
Sunday 5 October 2025 12:00 PM
For me the green season, or monsoon season, is a great time to get out and about for several reasons. Firstly it’s not so hot so you can actually spend time wandering around at your leisure to find new places and see new things without getting cooked. Secondly, the rain the plants and insects come out so there is a lot for the birds to feed on and as such more to see. There are also far less people around meaning it is quieter and less likely to scare the wildlife away. As normal this year, there are many birds around even in the busy tourist areas, if you actually take your time and look, especially in the back streets.

After a nice break of a few months due to having to train an orphaned kitten not to chase the wildlife away, I can at last get to venture out again. A year ago I came across a tiny lost kitten around four weeks old in a ditch that was flooded with no family around and she adopted me. So for a few months I had to put photography on hold until Leo (my cat) learned I wanted to take photos of the wildlife and not chase it.
A Handful of Hope on Phuket’s Shores

Sunday 17 August 2025 11:00 AM
With the monsoon season in Phuket comes the wind, the waves and a heartbreaking sight on our beautiful beaches. My heart sinks every time I walk along the shoreline and see it – a carpet of plastic bottles, tangled fishing nets and styrofoam containers. It can feel overwhelming. The task of cleaning it all up seems impossible. Many people ask, “Why bother? The ocean will just bring more tomorrow.”

Recently the Thai government introduced a controversial but potentially effective policy targeting e-cigarette users and sellers. Under this scheme, anyone reporting illegal vaping activities via the Thang Rath mobile app is eligible to receive 60% of the fines collected. Informants could earn as much as B3,000 from a single successful report, a compelling incentive to help enforce this public health measure.
