OK, so I admit to being easily amused, as well as famously pedantic. I enjoy imagining how veteran crime fiction authors must struggle to keep older, best-selling central characters active and virile enough to continue battering baddies when they are of a seniority associated with retirement homes. That it happens a lot might illustrate how frequently authors fail to envisage their central characters still dodging lead and slinging punches forty years after their crime fiction debuts.

Ron McMillan, an author now based in Chiang Mai, started out as a writer and photojournalist amidst the flying rocks and toxic teargas clouds of Seoul in the run-up to the 1988 Olympics. After covering the Seoul Games from opening to closing ceremonies, he shifted base to Hong Kong in time for the final decade of British colonial rule.
