Disney digs deep for ’Monsters at Work’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
The ‘Monsters’ universe is one of the most unique worlds ever created by the team at Pixar. The original film, 2001’s ‘Monsters, Inc’, was a pure animated masterpiece. However, its prequel 12 years later, ‘Monsters University’, was a let-down that fans of the original film wish never existed. The fact that even the story told seemed to contradict how the lovable monsters Mike (Billy Crystal – City Slickers) and Sulley (John Goodman – Coyote Ugly) said they met in the first film seemed to justify the belief that the film just didn’t fit into the universe that had been previously created.

If you are a true movie and TV buff then chances are you’ve either gone to in person or watched online a pop-culture convention. Of course the biggest in the world is the San Diego Comic-Con, where companies such as Marvel and DC compete against each other to see who can get the biggest reaction to whatever trailer or news they are releasing at the convention.

When you think of Australian cinema and films you think of cult classics. Over the past few years the Australian films that have made their way to Phuket have been horror films like Black Water: Abyss and Blood Relic. When you think of the great Australian film directors of the past decade you think of people such as George Miller (Mad Max), James Wan (Saw) and Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man). Even the great Quentin Tarantino is quick to admit that Australia has some of the finest cult film-makers in the world.
Jungle Cruise, a Disney ride gone right
Phuket Life

World Entertainment
A film based on a Disneyland ride. Don’t laugh, remember that was the premise behind one of Disney’s highest-earning franchises, Pirates Of The Caribbean, and now Disney is hoping that lightning can strike twice as they are set to release Jungle Cruise, a film that once again is based on one of their favourite theme-parks rides.
‘Gunpowder Milkshake’ is a blast
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Take one of the young stars of the Marvel universe and mix her alongside one of the stars of Game of Thrones and you get a pretty lethal combination. Then take the filmmaking skills from an up-and-coming director who is obviously inspired by films like Baby Driver and the work of Quentin Tarantino and stir it all together and the result is the energetic and very violent ‘Gunpowder Milkshake’.
Black Widow: Return of a true Marvel
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Despite the fact she has been many people’s favourite Avenger it was easy to start to think that Black Widow was the forgotten Avenger. Hardcore Marvel fans were furious when Captain Marvel became the first female-led Avengers movie, they saw it as disrespectful to Black Widow who had basically been there since Day One.
Loki unlocked in new series

One of the biggest complaints that some film lovers have levelled at Marvel films over the years is that the films have been the same. Epic battle sequences and cities crumbling to dust while muscle-bound heroes yell lines at the top of their voices. With the arrival of Wanda Vision on Disney+ it felt like Marvel had listened and created something vastly different. Something so different that the haters then decided it was ‘too different’.
Angelina Jolie back in action

Over recent years filmmaker Taylor Sheridan has had a huge impact on Hollywood. His screenplay for the hard-hitting Sicario heralded in a new age of dramatic intensity within a market that many said had gone soft. Then came his work on the under-rated Hell or High Water and the brilliant Wind River. Sheridan was no longer a lightweight, he had awards in his back pocket and actors like Jeremy Renner were lining up to work with him. To show that he was no flash in the pan then came one of the most eagerly-anticipated television shows of 2020, Yellowstone, of which Sheridan was the main creator.

Megan Fox goes ‘Rogue’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
A few years ago if actress Megan Fox had a film coming out the world knew about it. The talented actress was the face of huge franchises including ‘Transformers’ and ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’. She was so popular in fact that when she left the ‘Transformers’ franchise there were fans out there saying they would boycott the Michael Bay juggernaut due to the fact they thought she had been unceremoniously and unfairly dumped.
‘Friends: The Reunion’ breaks records, breaks barriers
Phuket Life

World Entertainment
It was the television event that every Friends fan wanted… except it wasn’t. There is no doubting the world domination that hit sitcom Friends had during its 10-season run from 1994. This wasn’t just a show that people gathered around the water cooler to talk about at work, this was a show that popular radio shows would spend an hour talking about the morning after each episode aired.
The Walrus and the Whistleblower: Heart-breaking documentary shines light on cruel corporate greed
Phuket Life

There is an age-old saying in Hollywood that goes, “Write what you know.” That could well be the mantra for Canadian documentary filmmaker Nathalie Bibeau and her latest film The Walrus and the Whistleblower which is available on iWonder now.
The familiar ‘Woman in the Window’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
The notion that Hollywood takes an old idea and puts a modern twist on it is not new. With the recent release of director Joe Wright’s (Atonement) new film The Woman In the Window on Netflix it seemed like everybody wanted to point out that this was a story that they had all seen before.

There are pluses and negatives to a film studio deciding to make a film based on a popular video game. The plus is that you have a legion of fans that will be ready to watch the film, the negative is that the legion of fans are gamers... some of the harshest critics in the world.
Nobody: High action fun, but not for the squeamish
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Gone are the days when a film can get away with senseless violence without there being some kind of ‘art’ to it. That’s not because of cancel culture, morals or the like, but instead simply because of what audiences expect from films these days. Yes, gone are the days when an audience would happily sit and watch an action hero blowing away bad guys for 90 minutes – story was optional.
From London to Moscow, ’The Courier’ unveils the real life of a Cold War spy
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
For a generation of movie and television fans a spy is someone who jets around the world, flirting with the opposite sex and getting into the occasional fight or car chase. Whether your favourite spy be Sidney Bristow, XXX or the leader of the pack James Bond they all live pretty much the same life. The weird thing that in comparison to real life things are a way off the scale. In real life your traditional spy will be doing more simple tasks in order to get information back to their handlers, and fights and car chases are the last things they want as they just draw attention to themselves.
