The week-long campaign incorporating the New Year holiday period began last Friday (Dec 29) and will continue conclude at midnight tonight.
The daily briefing for Day 6 of the campaign was held at Provincial Hall this monring and was overseen by Phuket Vice Governor Sattha Thongkham.
Mr Sattha was joined by Charan Kwankaew, Assistant Head of the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, and Boonyaphat Angkarchun, Policy Analyst Specialist from the same office, in addition to relevant officials.
The daily report recognised road accident statistics for the previous 24 hours of yesterday (Jan 3).
Mr Charan explained that four of the six reported injured were male and two were female although no further details regarding where the accidents occurred or the extent of the injuries was included in the report.
Yesterday’s statistics took the number of accidents recognised during the campaign to 36, with 35 people injured.
Thus far there has only been one fatality confirmed during the campaign – an accident in Thalang that occurred on Tuesday (Jan 2) which left one man dead.
The report repeated the same previously reported notes that the main contributing factors for road accidents during the campaign were risky driving behaviour, drunk driving and speeding. The most common vehicle involved in road accidents were motorbikes.
There are a total of 30 police checkpoints across the island, comprising 11 main checkpoints and 19 community checkpoints, the report repeated.
So far, Phuket officials have reported the number of fines issued by police during the current Seven Days campaign only once: for Day 1 of the campaign.
According to ThaiRSC 135 people were killed and 22,178 people were injured in road accidents in Phuket last year, marking a 23% increase in road accident fatalities on the island compared with 2022, and a 29% increase in the number of people injured in accidents on Phuket’s roads.
It was also confirmed during today’s meeting that 64 boat operators were tested at Ao Por Pier in Pa Khlok yesterday, which serves as a major jumping off point for tours to nearby islands.
Five boat operators tested positive for methamphetamine use in the snap tests conducted by Tourist Police and were suspended from their work duties immediately.
This follows officials admitting that the captain of the speedboat that slammed into rocks at Koh Maithon last Sunday, which resulted in a 5-year-old Russian girl’s death, tested positive for meth use after the incident.
