Zero deaths in Phuket on Day 1 of ‘Seven Days’ for New Year

PHUKET: Phuket officials have confirmed there were no deaths in road accidents in Phuket yesterday (Dec 29), the first day of the ‘Seven Days’ safety campaign for the New Year holidays.

The ‘intensive control period’ of this year’s annual safety campaign, focussing mainly on road accidents, began yesterday and will continue through Jan 4.

For the 24 hours of Dec 29, there were four people (three men and one woman) admitted to hospital for injuries in four accidents recognised by Phuket officials, Phuket Vice Governor Sattha Thongkham confirmed at a meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall this morning.

Three of the accidents were in Muang District, with the remaining accident occurring in Kathu District.

Of note, according to national road-safety agency ThaiRSC, 59 people were injured in Phuket road accidents yesterday.

According to ThaiRSC, so far 135 people have been killed in road accidents in Phuket so far this year, with another 22,079 people injured.

Phuket officials this morning reported that the main contributing factor for road accidents yesterday were risky driving behavior, drunk driving and speeding.

The most common vehicle involved in road accidents yesterday were motorbikes.

There are a total of 30 police checkpoints across the island, Vice Governor Sattha confirmed,  comprising 11 main checkpoints and 19 community checkpoints.

As usual, driving without a driver’s license was the most common offence, with police fining 378 people yesterday.

Sixty people were caught not wearing a helmet while riding a motorbike, eight people were caught drunk driving, seven were caught driving through a red light, five were caught not wearing a seatbelt, four were caught driving against the flow of traffic, two were caught using a phone while driving and one was fined for dangerous overtaking.

So far Phuket officials have recorded zero marine safety incidents during the campaign.
