The death was recognised at the daily briefing for Day 5 the ‘Seven Days’ safety campaign, which reported the recognised road accident statistics for the 24 hours of yesterday (Jan 2).
Chairing the meeting, held at Phuket Provincial Hall this morning (Jan 3), was Phuket Vice Governor Norasak Suksomboon.
According to officials, only three road accidents yesterday were recognised for purposes of the campaign: one in Muang District, the other two in Thalang.
The accident in Muang District accounted for one person (a male) admitted to hospital for injuries sustained, while the accidents in Thalang accounted for the one death and one other man admitted to hospital.
Of note, Phuket officials recognise only people admitted to hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in road accidents during the annual campaign.
The report of the meeting today by the Phuket branch of the Public Relations Department (PR Phuket) noted that the official tally for the ‘Seven Days’ campaign for the New Year so far was 29 people admitted to hospital for injuries, and one death.
National road-safety agency ThaiRSC also concurred that Phuket suffered one death in a road accident during the 24 hours of Jan 2, but that 77 people were injured in Phuket road accidents during the period.
ThaiRSC already reports three dead and 52 people injured in road accidents today (Jan 3).
According to ThaiRSC 135 people were killed and 22,178 people were injured in road accidents in Phuket last year, marking a 23% increase in road accident fatalities on the island compared with 2022, and a 29% increase in the number of people injured in accidents on Phuket’s roads.
The PR Phuket report repeated the same previously reported notes that the main contributing factors for road accidents during the campaign were risky driving behavior, drunk driving and speeding. The most common vehicle involved in road accidents were motorbikes.
There are a total of 30 police checkpoints across the island, comprising 11 main checkpoints and 19 community checkpoints, the report repeated.
As is now the trend, the briefing report today did not confirm the number of fines issued for traffic violations during the 24 hours of Jan 2.
So far, Phuket officials have reported the number of fines issued by police during the current Seven Days campaign only once: for Day 1 of the campaign.
