‘Don’t Look Up’, a sublime sideways view of our modern world
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
The last couple of years have been a crazy time. While many have just tried to live their lives despite the pandemic restrictions placed on them, we have also seen some truly crazy moments when it has come to world politics, people doubting scientists and of course developing their own conspiracy theories.
The King’s Man excels
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
One of the best franchises to have surfaced over the past decade has been the very British ‘Kingsman’ franchise. A kind of mix between James Bond and a Quentin Tarantino film, the original film not only made Taron Egerton a household name but also introduced the world of a cinema to a secret organisation that could even see Colin Firth lay waste to a room full of villains.
Resurrecting the Matrix
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
There is very little doubt that the original ‘Matrix’ movie released way back in 1999 changed cinema forever. For years directors like James Cameron and Steven Spielberg had been at the forefront of changing the visual look of the films that we went to see in cinemas. Suddenly this action film came from some unknown Australians that visually looked like something that had never been seen before. The film itself took the action style of Hong Kong martial arts films and mixed it with mind-bending special effects that quickly won over a legion of fans.
Spidey home for Christmas

It is always hard to gauge a Marvel movie by going on the company’s promises. Every time a new Marvel movie is coming out they promise that it is bigger and better than the last one. Like all repeated promises, sometimes they deliver and sometimes they don’t, but believe me you have to believe the hype when it comes to ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. Not only does the film deliver a new level of being epic, this is one film that is guaranteed to become a fan favourite… perhaps Marvel have finally found the way to create a film that true fans are going to love while still making that elusive cinema buck.
Bullock redefines the question of forgiveness
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
One quick glance at The Unforgivable and you could be forgiven for thinking that this is going to turn out to be some soppy, Hallmark-like film. But this is one film where appearances certainly don’t sum up what you are going to be in for when you sit down to watch the film.
Encanto, a fairy tale for adults
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Can a film that perhaps doesn’t quite fit the purpose it was created for still be a good film? That is certainly the question that surrounds the latest film from Disney – the animated spectacular Encanto.
Let there be carnage

Comic book fans everywhere are nervously waiting for the release of ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’. The first film in the franchise wasn’t necessarily a terrible film but it certainly wasn’t as good as what it should have been either. And while its predecessor didn’t exactly set the world on fire, this Venom film’s trailer seemed to offer a ray of hope for those fans who knew there was a decent Venom story waiting to be told.
‘Saw’ lives again, through ‘Spiral’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
The ‘Saw’ franchise of films just won’t die. Like some animated corpse in a horror film of its own, just when you think all life has been breathed out of the franchise itself, it comes back to life with an installment. Original creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell left the franchise a long time ago – Whannell even quipped during a Q&A session for his last film that he didn’t even know that one of the films was even coming out until he saw a billboard for it in LA – that hasn’t stopped the juggernaut though because there seems to be plenty eager filmmakers out there willing to give ‘Saw’ the kiss of life.
Red Notice: US$200mn blockbuster goes straight to streaming
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
It is perhaps a sign of the times when the biggest film to be released in Phuket this week is on a streaming platform despite the fact that cinemas are open. And when we say big – we mean big in every single way.
Marvel’s ‘Eternals’ one for the fans
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Another week, another Marvel film. That is certainly the way it feels at the moment. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is still in cinemas and we have Venom: Let There Be Carnage and a new Spider-Man movie being released in the next couple of months. Now this week we have Eternals being released and once again we see that the Marvel juggernaut is deciding to do things differently with this ‘phase’ of the Marvel Universe.
Liam Neeson, on ice
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
A couple of years ago screen legend Liam Neeson dared to mention the dreaded R word – retirement. At the time he said that he wouldn’t be retiring from the big screen completely but would be pulling away from action films now he was starting to age.
Hit ‘F9’ to escape
Phuket Life

To Fast & Furious fans the films are not a franchise – they are a religion. Most will recall the day that they saw the first film and for many of them they wouldn’t have even known who Paul Walker (Snow Dogs) or Vin Diesel (XXX) was, but by the time they left the cinema way back in 2001 they were wishing they were them.
‘Free Guy’, a computer character with a soul

They say that some roles change actors. Normally they are talking about character actors like Leonardo Di Caprio or Heath Ledger who take themselves to a dark place for a role and never seem to really recover from it. In the case of Ryan Reynolds it has felt like he has changed ever since he graced our screens as dry super-hero Deadpool.
‘Nightbooks’: A Halloween horror story for the family
Phuket Life
/
Phuket Entertainment
Netflix’s countdown to Halloween starts off with a family affair in the form of David Yarovesky’s (Brightburn) new film ‘Nightbooks’ which has just arrived on the streaming platform. There was once a time when the horror and family genres of films were kept wide apart, but with the rise in popularity in horror literature for young adults such as Goosebumps, it soon became a blend that Hollywood realised was an untapped venture.
The Suicide Squad goes cult classic
Phuket Life
/
Phuket Entertainment
The original Suicide Squad movie may have been much maligned, although the ‘Director’s Cut’ version certainly didn’t deserve to be, but it did show the world that DC did know how to mix their darkness with some good times and surprising humour. But like Green Lantern before it, it did split DC movie fans over whether it was a good or bad film, so much so that I doubt many people would have ever expected that there would be a follow-up film.
Hugh Jackman in ‘Reminiscence’ a ‘Joy’ to watch
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
When Hugh Jackman hung up his Wolverine boots… um, claws… he made the statement that one of the reasons for the decision was so that he could tackle very new and different roles. Of course one of his first performances outside of the Marvel universe was a return to his all-singing and all-dancing roots with his acclaimed performance in hit musical ‘The Greatest Showman’, and now Jackman heads into a whole new alternative sphere as he takes on the role of a noir detective in ‘Reminiscence’.
The Tomorrow War, a blockbuster for epic streaming
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
With cinemas still not fully opened around the world, one of the biggest movies of the year has just landed straight in everybody’s lounge-rooms. At a budget that topped the US$200-million-dollar mark ‘The Tomorrow War’ is no low-budget feature, in fact it is possibly one of the biggest blockbusters to go straight to a streaming service since the COVID outbreak started.
Cena comes of age
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
It has felt for a long time that John Cena has been living in the shadow of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. Perhaps Hollywood has felt that there is only room for one wrestler-turned-superstar actor, who knows, but for some reason while Johnson has become the poster boy for franchises like ‘The Fast and the Furious’ and ‘Jumanji’, Cena has been more maligned despite the fact that he put in well-received performances in action films such as ‘Bumblebee’ and ‘The Suicide Squad’ as well as comedies including ‘Trainwreck’ and ‘Daddy’s Home’.
New ‘Space Jam’ a slam dunk
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
If you are a fan of NBA basketball you will know that over the past few years there has been a huge debate over who deserves to be called the greatest basketballer of all time. Is the great man of the ’80s and ’90s, six time championship winner Michael Jordan. Is it the sadly deceased Koby Bryant, or is it the man quickly closing in on Jordan’s championship and MVP records – LeBron James.
The Devil Made Me Do It
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Hollywood blockbusters return to the big screen in Phuket this week as ‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’ finally makes its way to the big screen. While eagle-eyed horror fans will notice that creator James Wan might not be in the director’s chair this time around this could well be the best film in the trilogy so far.
