The issue was discussed at the Phuket Provincial Water Resources Subcommittee meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall yesterday (Sept 26), chaired by Phuket Vice Governor Amnuay Pinsuwan.
All relevant government agencies had representatives present at the meeting, including disaster officials.
Local officials are to review their incident response plans and be able to set up a front-line centre to respond to any disaster situations, with contingency plans so they can adjust their response to the situation.
Drains are to be cleared of any obstructions and the personnel and equipment necessary for use must be ready for to be deployed to flood-prone areas and areas at risk during the rainy season, said an official report of the meeting.
Local officials are to inspect embankments, and barriers and measures to increase drainage efficiency of waterways.
They are also to ramp up public awareness and their ability to inform the public of any dangers in the areas.
Looking beyond the rainy season, officials are to review their water storage and supply measures, including repairs and improvements to pumphouses.
Officials were also told to review their water management and consumption measures, especially in the tourism industry, the report noted.
