Exploring Phuket's nature off the beaten track
Phuket Life

Environment
Here in Phuket there are some great places to experience the natural world, some well known and others not so. Not only the national parks, mangroves and jungle areas, there are so many beaches, islands, coves and bays all teeming with life. Yes, we all know the main tourists locations that we see advertised everywhere, such as Maya Bay, James Bond Island, Pileh Lagoon and the Similan Islands, and yes, these are well known and part of the must see, bucket list places when in Phuket.
Tracing Phuket wildlife to the Jurassic era

An innocent photo taken of a bird in my back yard recently prompted childhood memories of studying dinosaurs at school, leaving me curious whether any species currently present in Phuket could be traced back to the Jurassic period.
Taking in Phuket’s natural splendour

As we recently entered a New Year I thought I would go back and reflect on the very reason I started to do these articles in the first place: my interest in the natural world.

The island of Phuket is not only celebrated for its warm tropical sun and fresh breeze which make it an ideal tropical paradise for tourism but it is also a great stopping off point for many migrating birds.

Here in Phuket we are lucky in my opinion to have a selection of some of the most stunning birds in the world: The Bee Eaters.
Exploring Natural Phuket in Green Season
Phuket Life
/
Environment
For me the green season, or monsoon season, is a great time to get out and about for several reasons. Firstly it’s not so hot so you can actually spend time wandering around at your leisure to find new places and see new things without getting cooked. Secondly, the rain the plants and insects come out so there is a lot for the birds to feed on and as such more to see. There are also far less people around meaning it is quieter and less likely to scare the wildlife away. As normal this year, there are many birds around even in the busy tourist areas, if you actually take your time and look, especially in the back streets.
Exploring the wonder of Phuket’s nature and wildlife

After a nice break of a few months due to having to train an orphaned kitten not to chase the wildlife away, I can at last get to venture out again. A year ago I came across a tiny lost kitten around four weeks old in a ditch that was flooded with no family around and she adopted me. So for a few months I had to put photography on hold until Leo (my cat) learned I wanted to take photos of the wildlife and not chase it.

After my series of articles in 2024 on the birds and butterflies of Phuket that seemed to be of interest I am glad to confirm I am now back to continue reporting on what I see when out and about in our tropical paradise.
Natural Phuket: Flutterby with butterflies

Once you get out of the concreted over towns, neon lights and traffic congestion and into the hills you get out of the humidity too and find quiet, and often nice cool breezes, not to mention good views. But best of all is the wildlife.
Natural beauty? Park it and see…

Here in Phuket we have so many beautiful natural sights on our doorstep and a bit further afield. This month I will be taking a break from Phuket itself as one of the best known national parks reopens for the high season.
Natural Phuket: Mid-monsoon comes alive
Phuket Life

Environment
As many people know, places in the tropics like Phuket are not always wall to wall sunshine. From May till November is really the monsoon season. This does not mean several months of hurricanes, storms and heavy rain. This is actually a great time for wildlife. Suddenly the island is green again and, like Spring in so many other places, bursts into life. The same happens here.
Natural Phuket: The best of ‘low season’

Many people come to Phuket all year round. Some for the first time while others have come multiple times. Many people who come this time of year for the first time are not sure what to expect. They see the photos of blue skies, crystal clear waters, then when they arrive they see wind, rain, grey skies and dark seas with large waves… and are at a loss what to think. Others prefer to come this time of year as it is cheaper and it is less crowded, but they still get plenty of sun, too. The key is knowing what to do and when to do it.
Natural Phuket: Green season’s hidden tiny wonders

After the heat at the end of high season comes the endless humidity and the need for 10 showers a day just to cool off. This is when Phuket’s wildlife comes alive. Suddenly all the plants and trees get a well-needed watering and spring to life. That again brings out all the small insects and in turn the birds and other creatures that feed on them.
Natural Phuket: Early green season on the beach

After the crowds of high season have gone and the craziness of Songkran is a long gone memory, the island of Phuket enters what’s locally known as the ‘Green Season’. In most holiday destinations when it gets quieter it’s known as the ‘off-season’ or ‘low season’. Here it’s called the green season for a very good reason. The first rains have come and all the plants burst into life. The island becomes green again. It really is like the island is coming alive again.

Here in Phuket we have a few large birds of prey that are fairly common even in a busy place like Patong. I do mean the avian type with wings and feathers and not the nocturnal type as seen more commonly down Bangla Rd.

So many people when deciding on where to go for their holidays look at the photos in a brochure or on the internet. What do they have to go on? Well, they have the reviews written by others who have been there. They have the photos from the tourism department of that country or destination, the word of mouth from others who have been there, or stories from people who know someone who has been there.
