‘Top Gun: Maverick’: Big action, for the big screen
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Filmmaker Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion) has one of the toughest jobs in cinema this year. Mr Kosinski is the man responsible for bringing ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ to the big screen. Mark my words if the film is a flop there will be people baying for his blood because the original ‘Top Gun’ film is not just a favourite for many cinemaphiles, it is an absolute classic that was lauded with changing cinema forever.
Nic Cage and ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
If there is ever an actor that deserves to play himself in a film it is certainly Nicolas Cage. Cage has unfairly been made the subject of some pretty unfair jokes over the years. Unfair because unlike many other actors out there Cage has always been an actor that has been willing to ‘experiment’ with the roles he took on.
Everything Everywhere All at Once ‒ or not
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
There seems to be an element creeping through Hollywood where some filmmakers seem to think that a film needs a ‘weird’ element to try and set it apart from other films that are currently in cinemas. We saw it earlier this year with the film ‘C’mon C’mon’, where the filmmakers thought that filming it in black and white would perhaps compensate for the fact that the characters are slightly unlikable.
Doctor Strange: A spellbinding experience
Phuket Life

As a studio, Marvel finds them in a strange position at the moment. They should be celebrating in the afterglow of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, which became one of the highest-grossing and best-received Marvel movies of all time. But since then they have released the poorly received ‘Morbius’ while their latest streaming series ‘Moon Knight’ seems to have left audiences saying, “It’s a bit dark.”
Zac Efron glisters in ‘Gold’

When the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe filmmakers were left with some very hard decisions to make. Some decided to take the time to sit down and work on their next script while their current filming schedules were placed on hiatus. Then there were a brave few who decided that they could come up with a way to shoot a film using a minimalistic cast and crew so they could abide by each country’s strict COVID restrictions.
Romancing ’The Lost City’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Sometimes when a perfect cast comes together the result is pure magic. That is certainly the case with brand-new action comedy ‘The Lost City’ that brings together a group of Hollywood A-Listers for a film that is one of the biggest surprises of 2022. Like horror-comedy, the action-comedy genre is one of the hardest to make work, but here directors Aaron and Adam Nee (Band of Robbers) have delivered the goods in a hilariously action-packed way.
Jude Law turns it on as ‘Fantastic Beasts’ matures
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
The Wizarding World is a world that simply just keeps giving to cinema fans and this time it has delivered a film that is going to be surprising for both fans and non-fans alike. In the past both the ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Fantastic Beasts’ films have been viewed as something that is largely for a family as a whole, but Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore moves away from that with a more adult-oriented film that rests heavily on the spy/thriller genre.
Family fun ‘Sonic’ returns
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
The original ‘Sonic’ movie was a rarity. A movie based on a video game that was both entertaining and kept the gamers happy. For once it seemed that the filmmakers behind a film actually had a vast knowledge of the game they were bringing to life and had incorporated as much from ‘game play’ as they could.
Marvel’s ‘Morbius’ sufficiently succulent
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Sometimes it feels that cinema audiences can be a little harsh on films. The thoughts on the latest Marvel movie to be released – ‘Morbius’ – seem scattered. There are the downright scathing through to the ho-hum. But is this an issue that Marvel have created themselves.
Farewell, Jackass
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Remember when Jackass was the coolest thing on TV? It’s good if you do because given the amount of the concussions the cast of Jackass have had over the years they probably don’t! But anyway, there was once a time when Johnny Knoxville (Bad Grandpa) and his loyal band of misfits were the most watched thing on TV and teenagers right around the world were crashing bikes and hurting themselves in a bid to try and emulate their heroes.
‘Dog’ testament to the healing powers of man’s best friend
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Sometimes the title of a film can be really misleading. Take brand-new film ‘Dog’ for example. With the inclusion of Channing Tatum (White House Down) as the lead you could be forgiven for thinking that this would be something light and fluffy – a nice story about a man and his dog. But this film goes a lot deeper than that and instead explores the effects of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on both soldiers and their canine companions.
‘Book of Love’ puts the fun back into romantic comedy
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Love is universal! Although the type of universal love that Hollywood has been talking about in romantic comedies over the years has often been pretty unrealistic – honestly when has anyone ever landed in a different country and found everybody, including the person they like, all seem to speak one language. That finally has been addressed in the brand-new romantic comedy ‘Book of Love’.
Batman: Back in black
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Gotham’s caped crusader Batman has taken on many different personas on screens over the years. From the campy Adam West years in the ’60s through to the more serious adaptations brought to the screen by directors Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan. Of course actors George Clooney, Val Kilmer and Ben Affleck have had less successful attempts at wearing the famed black mask, but now star Robert Pattinson (‘Twilight’) has teamed up with director Matt Reeves (‘War for the Planet of the Apes’) to bring the darkest adaption of the famed comic book hero to the screen.
Neeson shines in ‘Blacklight’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Over the past decade actor Liam Neeson has established himself as an action hero in sleek thrillers that you can normally guarantee are better than the stock standard films in the genre. Even his films that take a more indie approach, like The Ice Road, always seem to have something about them that makes them an enjoyable watch from beginning to end. That tradition continues with Neeson’s latest film – Blacklight from director Mark Williams (Honest Thief).
‘Uncharted’ finds its place on the big screen
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
For gamers one of the most anticipated video game to film adaptations over the past few years has been ‘Uncharted’. Before Hollywood even became aware of the game’s popularity it felt like gamers were already calling out for it. And it wasn’t just gamers in front of the PlayStations who were interested to see what would happen, there were high profile actors and directors – including the likes of David O. Russell and Robert De Niro who were putting their hands to be involved should the project ever get off the ground.
Serious, fun to be found in ‘Marry Me’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
There was a time when gifted filmmakers treated the romance genre the same way they treated every other film they approached. They wanted the film to be original and showcase their skills. The result was classic romance films such as Pretty Woman and When Harry Met Sally. Yes, they were still kind of sappy but they had something different about them that made them an enjoyable watch for both women and men alike.
‘Moonfall’ lands where you like it
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
You really have to wonder what the Earth has ever done to director Roland Emmerich. With the movies that he has penned and directed over the years it feels like Emmerich is always thinking of ways to destroy the planet we live on. From creature feature ‘Godzilla’, to alien warfare in ‘Independence Day’ and doomsday films ‘2012’ and ‘The Day After Tomorrow’, Emmerich has brought planet destruction to the big screen on a number of occasions. Now he is at it again with the epic ‘Moonfall’.
Resident Evil goes back to its roots
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Cinema-goers have had a very turbulent relationship with the ‘Resident Evil’ franchise over the years. That is largely because of the fact that the quality of the films that have been released have been very up and down. Even the most hardened fans are quick to admit that the franchise went on a little too long, and yes it also had some weak films. But on the flipside the original and ‘Resident Evil: Extinction’ were two of the best action films to ever be made.
‘Scream’ like the days of old
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
For a generation of cinema fans ‘Scream’ was the film that got them hooked on horror. At a time when the slasher horror was starting to go through a bit of a resurgence the original Scream film stood out from the rest because of the fact director Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) and Kevin Williamson (I Know What You Did Last Summer) used the film to almost mock the tropes of what made a slasher film a slasher film.
Singing the worthy praises of ‘Sing 2’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
One of the most charming kids’ films to have surfaced over the past few years was ‘Sing’. With so much mindless family entertainment around these days it was nice to find a film that not only entertained but also taught valuable lessons and had a story that even adults could become engrossed in. Then of course there was the film’s originality and a soundtrack so great that even to this day kids at schools right across Australia ask for it to be played for them.
