‘Barbie’ divides audiences
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
It is the film that has the whole world talking right now – ‘Barbie’. In the lead-up nobody really knew what to expect, except a lot of pink. Was it going to be something serious aimed for adults, or was it going to be funny and aimed at children? It seems though it wasn’t only the cinema-going audience asking those questions. They were questions that the filmmakers themselves may have been confused about because the result is a film that seems to awkwardly sit in the middle.
Nolan delivers masterpiece with ‘Oppenheimer’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
When it comes to how he is viewed by the cinema world, director Christopher Nolan is now in rare air. He doesn’t need to make a film with crazy stunts to have one of his movies deemed a blockbuster – just having his name on the poster does that.
‘Mission: Impossible’ delivers a true ‘Dead Reckoning’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
There is little doubt that the team behind ‘Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One’ went all out to promote the movie to anyone who would listen. In the post-COVID world where a lot of films sneak into cinemas with little fanfare, it was pretty refreshing to see a team go all out – the cast were doing breakfast TV appearances; billboards were everywhere and Tom Cruise was doing guest appearances in front of landmarks right around the world.
‘Joy Ride’ gets thumbs-up for slick comedy
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
With the arrival of ‘Joy Ride’ in cinemas we may have just seen the start of a very special film journey for a lot of audience members. See this is one of those films where the trailer just doesn’t do the film justice. Many will be turned off by the fact that this seems to be an outrageous comedy targeted at teenagers… when in reality the debut feature film from Adele Lim is so much more.
Indiana Jones back in action
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Grab the hat and whip because the man, the legend, Indiana Jones is back in ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’. The film itself may have been put on the backburner due to the saturation of ads for ‘Mission Impossible’ and ‘Barbie’ but this rightfully should be one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year.
Pixar gets heart-warming with ‘Elemental’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
One of the things that Pixar have excelled at over the years has been putting heart into their films. Whether it be a story about misfit toys or monsters learning that humans aren’t evil, the studio’s filmmakers have always managed to put a massive amount of emotion into their stories… so much so that many cinema lovers over the years have found that these are animations that can make you cry.
‘The Flash’ a bright spark for the future
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Has there ever been a film that has gone on a bigger rollercoaster ride before its release than ‘The Flash’? First there were DC fans unhappy at the fact that Grant Gustin, who plays Flash in the TV series, wasn’t offered the role for the movie. Then that all seemed to have been forgotten when it was announced that screen legend Michael Keaton would be reprising his role of Batman, some 30 years after the last time he put on the Batsuit.
‘Transformers’ gets a ‘Beastly’ upgrade
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
The past few years have been a pretty frustrating time for fans of the Transformers franchise. After the success of 2018’s ‘Bumblebee’ many were expecting more Transformers films to hit cinemas – yet strangely it has taken five years to do so with ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ finally arriving now. The good news is that it has been well worth the wait.
Latest ‘Spider-Man’ brings graphic novel glory to life
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
When ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ was released in 2018, it didn’t only shake up the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it also changed animated films forever. While companies like Dreamworks and Pixar had liked to view themselves at the forefront of animated technology for years, they were suddenly stunned by a film that’s visual stylings incorporated street art and the look and feel of graphic novels in a way that no film had ever done before – and audiences loved it.
‘Little Mermaid’ brings new view to a classic
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Has there ever been a film that has divided people before it has been released as much as Disney’s new real-life adaption of ‘The Little Mermaid’? If you have been on social media over the past few months, then it would be impossible that you haven’t seen people projecting what they believe they will think of the reworking of the animated family classic.
Joaquin Phoenix shines where ‘Beau Is Afraid’ fails
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Ari Aster has to be one of the most interesting directors in modern day cinema. On one hand he makes a film nearly impossible to decipher in ‘Hereditary’ but on the other hand he can make a work of art like ‘Midsumma’. With that in mind many might find themselves approaching his latest film – ‘Beau Is Afraid’ – with nervous excitement.
‘Guardians Vol 3’ gets emotional, arrives with wow reviews
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Grab the tissues because you are going to need them for this one. With so much talk that the last couple of Marvel movies have had no ‘heart’, director/screenwriter James Gunn (The Suicide Squad) bucks that trend with ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3’ – a film with so much emotion and heart that audience members will find themselves crying from time and time and shows a director that was obviously completely in love with the project that he was working on.
Evil Dead back on the ‘rise’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Over the past few years horror fans have watched a pretty severe evolution in their cinematic genre. It feels like filmmakers and production studios have wanted to move away from the classic horror tropes of films like ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ and ‘Scream’ and the result has been the so-called ‘more intelligent’ and ‘politically inspired films’ like ‘Midsumma’ and ‘Get Out’.
Stunning ‘Suzume’ takes anime to another level
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
One of the things that has become obvious over the past couple of years is how the quality of Asian cinema at the moment has surpassed a lot of the films coming out of Hollywood. While amazing Korean dramas like ‘Parasite’ and ‘Broker’ have wowed critics and audiences all around, we are now seeing Japanese animated films having their own mass following amongst cinema goers around the world.
Sam Raimi still original with ‘65’
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
One of the most unusual films to surface in 2023 just happens to be one of the most creative action films that we have seen in recent years. 65 is basically a film that was made out of necessity. Even during a global pandemic it is difficult to keep good producers like Sam Raimi (Spider-Man) from wanting to let his creative juices flow.
Super Mario Bros. back in action
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
Ever since the success of ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ making US$275 million at the box office back in 2001, it has felt that Hollywood has realised that the gamer’s buck is one worth chasing. The only issue during that time is that ‘good’ movies based on video games have been incredibly difficult to make. While some – like ‘Resident Evil’ and ‘Unchartered’ seem to have won people over – there have been myriad covers that have been universally caned for either not capturing the game properly or even just being a ‘bad’ film.
‘Dungeons & Dragons’ mix it up
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
One of the hardest group of people to please with film adaptions are gamers. Understandably when they watch a film based on their favourite game – whether that be table-top or video game – they want it to reflect what they have known and loved for years. The difficulty there is that film studios also want the film to make money so therefore need filmmakers to create a film that the wider cinema audience will want to see and understand as well.
John Wick returns in style
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
One of the most interesting films to be released in cinemas this year may well be ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’. When someone looks at the synopsis of this film they could be forgiven for wondering how a plot so thin could entertain an audience for close to three hours. Yet, after they have watched the film they will be left thinking they have seen one of the best action films of 2023.
‘Shazam!’ puts on a show
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
When the first ‘Shazam!’ movie was released in 2019, it seemed to take most comic book fans by surprise. It felt like people were not expecting much and were then blown away by a film that was made up of an interesting, fresh storyline, characters that were easy to fall in love with and just the right amount of humour.
Time to ‘Scream’ again
Phuket Life
/
World Entertainment
It is hard to imagine that the film that filmmaker Kevin Williamson made back in 1996 aimed at lightly mocking the slasher horror genre turned into what we now know as the ‘Scream’ franchise – a franchise that has just released its sixth film and had a spin-off television series. Williamson’s involvement with the series is now limited but his characters live on and have created a passionate group of fans that keep asking for bloody adventures of Woodsboro to keep coming back to the big screen.
