The controversy erupted after the Facebook page ‘Phuket Expose’ shared a 21-second video clip showing several young men discharging firearms at the beach at night.

The post, captioned ‘What happened in Phuket?’ included the hashtag #ThisIsPhuket and claimed the same group had previously been involved in a shooting incident at a marijuana shop.

The video, which quickly spread across social media platforms, ignited criticism from locals and netizens alike, with many expressing alarm over the brazen behaviour and its potential impact on the island’s reputation as a tourist destination.

Of note, the youths were not firing the guns in anger at any specific targets.

No people were injured in the ‘gun practice’ shootings.

In response to the video being posted online, Cherng Talay police tracked down and arrested three of the youths seen firing handguns at the beach.

Siwakorn Prabpol, 24, was charged with causing an explosion likely to endanger others or damage property; Athit Manabut, 22, was charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, carrying a firearm in public without permission, and discharging a weapon without cause; and Prachaya Chuenkeam, 18, faced identical charges related to unlawful possession, transport, and use of a firearm.

Cherng Talay Police have emphasised that they are treating the matter seriously, particularly in light of concerns about public safety and the island’s international image.

Police have not ruled out further arrests as the investigation continues.
