The Young War Elephants went in search of an early goal at Chonburi Stadium and were rewarded after just five minutes with Purachet Thodsanid putting them ahead, reports the Bangkok Post.
An own goal by defender John Lucero in the 21st minute doubled their advantage. Teerasak Poeiphimai’s effort in the 29th minute ensured Thailand had all but sealed the win.
Anan Yodsangwal scored their fourth goal in the 71st minute while striker Yotsakorn Burapha capped the victory with his goal just before the final whistle.
In the other match of the same group, Malaysia defeated Bangladesh 2-0.
Thailand next play Bangladesh tomorrow while the Philippines will have to beat Malaysia to stay in the competition.
“I think we should have scored more goals but overall, it was a pleasing performance,” said Thailand coach Issara Sritaro.
“We have to praise Bangladesh for their good fight against Malaysia. They only conceded goals towards the end of the match. We have to find a way to beat them.”
The 11 group winners, together with the four best second-placed teams, reach the 16-team finals alongside hosts Qatar.
The sixth edition of the competition is scheduled from April 15 to May 3, 2024. The top three teams from the tournament earn tickets to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
