Women curry vendors killed in accident

PHUKET: Two women delivering curry to a mobile vendor were killed when the motorbike they were riding was struck by an airline employee driving at speed in Tambon Thepkrasattri early this morning (Mar 4).

Pol Capt Kraisorn Bunchaop of the Thalang Police was notified of the accident, on the Baan Mueang Mai - Baan Para Rd, in Moo 5, Thepkrasattri, at 6:16am.

Police and rescue workers from the Kusoildharm Foundation and a medical team from Vachira Phuket Hospital arrived at the scene to find the bodies of the two women ‒ Pensri Klaewkla, 58, of Moo 5, Thepkrasattri, and Thimaporn Rachasi, 55. From Nakhon Sri Thammarat ‒ on the road 

Nearby in a roadside drainage ditch was the Honda Wave motorbike they women were riding on.

About 50 metres down the road was a Phuket-registered white Toyota Yaris with heavy damage to its front and windscreen.

Still at the scene was the driver of the Yaris, Shikako Tanaka, 31, an employee with a well-known airline, in a state of shock. Ms Tanaka is registered as living in Moo 10, Thepkrasattri, police noted.

According to the preliminary investigation by police, Ms Pensri and Ms Thimaporn had just finished delivering curry to a motorbike-with-sidecar mobile vendor.

They ventured back out onto the road when they were struck by the Yaris driven by Ms Tanaka.

The collision was captured on CCTV. The car was travelling at speed, police also noted.

Police are continuing their investigation into the accident.

According to national road safety agency ThaiRSC, 37 people have died in road accidents in Phuket since the beginning of the year, with another 5,110 people injured in accidents on Phuket’s roads.
