The motorbike driver, Nikorn Srirod, 44, from Trang, apparently fell asleep while driving, causing the accident, police have reported.
Thalang Police were informed of the accident, in front of Muang Mai City Pillar Shrine on Thepkrasattri Rd, at about 3:30am.
At the scene officers and emergency responders found Wanna Songsri, who was riding as passenger on the motorbike, already dead from her injuries.
Nikorn was driving his Honda Wave 110 motorbike southbound along Thepkrasattri Rd when he apparently fell asleep and crashed into a cement table in front of a house by the side of the road.
Nikorn suffered injuries in the accident and was taken to Thalang Hospital, police noted.
Police are investigating the accident with the intent of pressing charges.
According to national road safety agency ThaiRSC, so far 60 people have been killed and a further 9,240 people injured in road accidents in Phuket since Jan 1 this year.
