Woman dies as pickup slams into street light

PHUKET: A woman was killed and a man injured after a pickup truck skidded off the road and crashed into a roadside street light in Thalang yesterday morning (May 11).

Police were alerted to the crash at around 7am and responded to the scene on Don Chom Tao Road, in Thepkrasattri.

Pol Lt Wiriyapong Srinuanpan of the Thalang Police led the response team along with rescue workers from the Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation.

At the scene, officers found a black Isuzu half-cab pickup truck, registered in Bangkok with significant damage to the passenger’s side.

Inside, a woman identified as Sasipha Mi-on, 42, was found unconscious and critically injured in the front passenger seat. Rescuers performed CPR and rushed her to Thalang Hospital, but she was later pronounced dead.

The driver, Phaibun Sammit, 62, sustained minor injuries including abrasions but remained conscious. He was also taken to Thalang Hospital for treatment.

According to the police investigation, the pickup truck had lost control on a curve near the National Telecom building, veered onto the footpath and continued for another 22 metres before slamming into a street light.

Officers documented the scene and at last report were still investigating the cause of the accident.
