Woman alleges police complicit in failing to arrest perpetrator in Phuket Town knife attack

The woman, ‘Ms Pond’ (real name withheld by request), 26, told reporters that her 18-year-old brother, Pan, was attacked while trying to resolve a dispute over a woman.

The dispute was between one of Pan’s friends and the woman’s boyfriend, ‘Mr Arm’.

Her brother, Pan and three friends agreed to meet on Ratsada Rd in Phuket Town at midnight on Sept 24 to resolve their differences.

Pan’s group brought no weapons as the agreement was to discuss and solve the issue. However, four young men arrived on two motorbikes, all carrying long knives.

Pan could identify one of the four as he had seen him at vocational college, but the other three he had never seen before.

The four dismounted and Pan suggested to Mr Arm for Mr Arm to punch Pan’s friend once and be done with the dispute.

Mr Arm did not agree, and one of the four men swung his long blade at Pan.

Pan dodged the slash and fell down. He got back up and fled, but was chased and fell down again.

Pan shouted out twice, “I wasn’t me!”. Regardless, his attacker swung his blade again. Pan raised his left hand to protect himself, and the blade cut deep into his wrist.

Pan was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where it was confirmed that the slash had nearly severed two tendons in his wrist.

Pol Lt Col Ekkasak Kwanwan of Phuket City Police was informed of the incident at 12:20am, Sept 24

Ms Pond told reporters that the officers initially assigned the case had now been moved out of Phuket City Police Station, and that Pol Lt Col Thanom Thongpaen had taken over the case.

CCTV footage of the attack on the street had been made available, Ms Pond said.

The initial investigator had charged the perpetrator, a ‘Mr Donut’, with conspiring to harm others resulting in serious injury ‒ but since then nothing had happened.

“Today, Donut, the perpetrator, is still acting cool and still posting online,” she said.

“This happened in September and it’s been three months. All I know is that the police only informed us that an arrest warrant had been issued since November, but now I see it still has yet to be served,” she added

Ms Pond said she was frightened, as she, too, lives near the college where the attackers attend classes.

“I’m afraid because there are posts here and there all the time. Like yesterday, the other side said they were going to sue us under the Computer Crimes Act because of what we have posted,” she said.

Pan himself told reporters, “I want the authorities to help quickly catch the person who attacked me because after this happened, my life is not fun at all. I’m only 18 years old, and I’m not happy with my life. I’m always in fear. Everywhere I go I’m very stressed.”
