Police and Kusoldharm Foundation rescue workers were called to the Ruam 2 Bridge on Anuphas Rd at 12:30am (May 12), where they found the body of local resident Ubol Nathip on the road with broken limbs and severe head injury.
“Residents in the area said they heard a loud bang and when they came out to look, they discovered the woman’s body on the road,” said Maj Santi Prakobpran of the Phuket City Police.
“They said she probably tried to cross the road to find cover because it was raining very hard at that time. Her body was taken to Vachira Hospital and her family have been notified,” he added.
Ms Ubol’s body had been dragged at least 10 metres along the road, Maj Santi said.
“There is no CCTV in the area where the incident happened, and there were no witnesses to verify what happened. Local residents could not recall any vehicles on the street by the time they came out to see what happened, but they said many ice, water and fish delivery trucks use that road,” he said.
“We will check CCTV in front of the Phuket Provincial Hospital and Karn Keha Koh Sirey public housing estate. We will find this hit-and-run driver and bring him/her in,” Maj Santi assured.
Ms Ubol’s family told police that she suffered from dementia and often wandered through the neighbourhood at night, and most of the time they found her near the bridge.
“If they noticed she went missing, they would go looking for her, but last night she left when they all went to bed so no one knew she was gone until she was found dead on street,” Maj Santi said.
