The event, officiated by Phuket Vice Governor Sattha Thongkham, focuses on people not drinking and driving and for all motorbike users to wear a helmet ‒ and to fasten the helmet’s chin strap.
The event, held in front of the Wichit Municipality offices on Chao Fa East Rd, also saw a convoy of motorbikes take to the streets to highlight safe riding.
Wichit Mayor Kreetha Chotiwitpipat explained that the Wichit road-safety campaign is a local extension of the national road-safety campaign for the New Year, which starts at midnight tonight.
The national campaign, for decades called the ‘Seven Days of Danger’, this year will be held from Dec 29 to Jan 4 ‒ and has been rebranded as the ‘Seven Days of Family Happiness’.
“The goal is to integrate cooperation in preventing and reducing road accidents, including creating safety for citizens and tourists from all disasters as much as possible under the campaign theme ‘Drive safely. Thailand without accidents’,” he said.
The campaign includes measures to prevent and reduce road accidents according to key factors, including traffic management, reducing road and environmental risk factors, reducing vehicle risk factors, getting motorists to use the road safely and providing assistance after an accident, he added.
