Thailand’s white mask movement features protestors wearing Guy Fawkes masks, as seen in anti-government protests in major cities around the world following the global financial crisis of 2008.
One of the organisers of the protest, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Phuket News today, “Actually, we were planning to stage the protest tomorrow (June 6), but we decided to move it to Sunday because more people will be free to join.
“We are individual groups who are fed up with the way the country is being run under this cabinet. What [Deputy Prime Minister] Plodprasop [Suraswadi] said on Sunday about Phuket was just the final straw.
“It will be a non-violent protest. We just want to send a message from Phuket to the government.”
The white maskis supposedly based on Guy Fawkes, who was captured in 1605 while trying to blow up the British Houses of Parliament. The mask design first appeared in the 2005 movie V for Vendetta and was then adopted by anti-government protestors across Europe and North America.
