A high-level meeting on the project, aimed at integrating water transport networks, was held at the ‘Smart Operations Center’ at Phuket Provincial Hall yesterday (Feb 17).
Dr Somkid Chokhong, Advisor to the Governor of Phuket, chaired the meeting, which brought together officials from various agencies to discuss strategies for alleviating road congestion.
The initiative, overseen by the Phuket Marine Office, focuses on reducing the impact of ongoing construction projects and assessing the feasibility of bypass roads.
One key aspect of the plan is the development of a water transport system, including the ‘Boat Taxi’ project, which is expected to help divert traffic from the roads.
The meeting reviewed potential locations for mooring buoys, with sites under consideration in Sirinat National Park, Mai Khao, Sakhu, Cherng Talay, Kamala, Patong and Karon.
Officials also discussed the relevant laws and regulations that would affect such an operation, and sought input from stakeholders.
This initiative aligns with a directive from the Prime Minister and a Cabinet resolution issued on Jan 13, 2025, prioritizing efficient water transport development in Phuket, said an Official report of the meeting.
The plan aims to support both economic and tourism growth while offering a sustainable solution to the island’s traffic woes, the report added.
