The latest notice confirms that the Bang Khu Underpass, Samkong Underpass and Darasamut Underpass will be closed nightly from 8pm to 6am through to June 14 while upgrade works are carried out.
The announcement marks an extension of works at the Darasamut and Sam Kong underpasses, which were previously scheduled to be completed by May 31.
According to the Phuket Highways Office, the project is part of the development of a Smart City Remote Control and Monitoring Centre for Phuket’s underpass network.
The works include the removal of ageing lighting systems and installation of new electrical systems equipped with remote power outage notification technology.
Crews are also installing automatic licence plate recognition cameras and upgrading traffic signs to internet-connected variable message systems.
The project covers five locations: the Phuket Airport Underpass, where work has already been completed; the Bang Khu, Samkong and Darasamut underpasses, which are currently undergoing upgrades; and the Chalong Underpass.
Officials said the improvements are intended to enhance traffic management, safety and monitoring capabilities across Phuket’s key transport routes.
Motorists are advised to avoid the affected underpasses during closure hours and use alternative routes where possible.
The Phuket Highways Office apologised for any inconvenience caused by the overnight works.
Senior Civil Engineer Sanakorn Thabthimthongsuk is overseeing the project. Members of the public can report damaged roads, faulty streetlights, malfunctioning traffic signals and other highway-related issues to the Phuket Highway District Office at 076-212179 during office hours, or via the Department of Highways 24-hour hotline on 1586.
