Turkish tourist killed in Karon motorbike crash

PHUKET: A 23-year-old Turkish tourist was killed instantly in a motorcycle collision with a van on Patak Rd in Karon in the early hours of this morning (Jan 28).

Karon Police were notified of the crash at about 2:30am near the intersection leading to the Méridien Phuket Beach Resort. Pol Lt Col Surasak Sudmuang, an investigator at Karon Police Station, led officers to the scene along with rescue workers from the Kusoldharm Foundation, Patong branch.

At the scene, police found a Honda motorcycle and two Toyota vans. The motorcycle rider was identified as a Turkish national*, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that the tourist had been wearing a helmet and was travelling alone.

The first van involved, a Toyota registered in Phuket, was driven by Prawit Songnasuk, 58, while a second Toyota van at the scene was driven by Praiwan Bamrungyat, 33.

According to initial police findings, the Turkish man was riding out from the access road leading to the Méridien Hotel and attempted to turn right onto Patak Rd when his motorcycle collided with the first van, which was travelling from Karon towards Patong.

Police carried out alcohol tests on both van drivers, with results showing no alcohol in their systems. Officers also confirmed that both drivers held valid public transport driving licences.

No additional property damage was reported as a result of the crash.

In an official report submitted to the Phuket Provincial Police Commander, Karon Police stated that the cause of the accident remains under investigation. Officers are continuing to gather evidence and review the circumstances surrounding the collision to determine responsibility.

Police have not yet announced whether any charges will be filed.
