Tri Trang Beach cleared after wastewater complaints

PHUKET: Phuket authorities have confirmed that seawater at Tri Trang Beach in Patong is clear and unpolluted, after a late-night inspection found viral images of dark, murky water circulating online were from an earlier incident.

The response came after social media posts raised concerns among residents and tourists about possible pollution at the popular beach.

At 10pm yesterday (Apr 23), Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn ordered an urgent investigation, assigning Deputy Governor Adul Chuthong to lead a multi-agency inspection at Tri Trang Beach.

Joining the inspection were Phuket Provincial Palad (Chief Administration Officer) Rungruang Thimabut, Kathu District Chief Akkarapol Suthirak Jitsupap, officials from Patong Municipality, and officers from the Environmental and Pollution Control Office Region 15 Phuket.

Officials reported that both the seawater and drainage outlets at the beach appeared normal, with no signs of sewage discharge or other abnormalities.

Enquiries with local beach massage operators suggested that the images of black water were likely taken during an incident in mid-March, more than a month ago, and do not reflect current conditions.

Despite finding no present issues, officials have launched a follow-up review, requesting CCTV footage from nearby hotels to trace the source of the earlier incident. Authorities confirmed that legal action will be taken if any violations are identified.

Under the National Environmental Quality Promotion and Preservation Act B.E. 2535, businesses found illegally discharging wastewater or failing to comply with environmental reporting requirements face fines of up to B1 million, with additional daily penalties of up to B100,000 until compliance is achieved.

Authorities also warned that hotels found in breach of regulations could be ordered to immediately halt wastewater discharge. Failure to comply may result in temporary closure or, in severe cases, revocation of operating licences.

The Phuket Provincial Administration has urged both residents and businesses to report any suspected environmental violations to Patong Municipality or the Kathu District Office to ensure swift investigation and protect the island’s natural resources and tourism reputation.
