The officer involved in the accident was Police Staff Sergeant Rattanachai Promkhwan, in charge of Traffic Police Stationed at the Heroines Monument.

SSgt Rattanachai was responding to a report of an accident in front of the Bangchak petrol station in Tha Ruea, Srisoonthorn, when the accident happened at about 12:15pm.

SSgt Rattanachai was approaching the U-turn in front of Tha Ruea Temple when a white Toyota Vios in front of him braked to safely stop before the U-turn.

SSgt Rattanachai braked heavily and lost control of the new standard-issue Yamaha NMax motorbike he was riding. The motorbike spilled onto the road and struck the back of the white Vios, driven by Russian tourist Vasily Glekov, while SSgt Rattanachai spilled onto the road.

SSgt Rattanachai sustained injuries to his left arm, chest and left leg. He was quickly taken to Thalang Hospital for medical attention.

Mr Glekov remained at the accident scene, and cooperated with police as they tried to ascertain what had caused the accident. Traffic CCTV from Srisoonthorn Municipality soon made the sequence of events very clear.

At last report, Thalang Police were still continuing with their investigation to determine who, if anyone, should be deemed at fault.
