Pol Capt Kraisorn Boonprasop of the Thalang Police said officers were informed of the accident, opposite the Tha Ruea Shrine on Thepkrasattri Rd (northbound), just south of the Heroines Monument, at about 10pm.

Rescue workers from Srisoonthorn Municipality and the Kusoldharm Foundation arrived at the scene to find the white passenger van, registered in Pathum Thani, damaged from where it had slid side-on into a power pole.

There were three Croatian tourists travelling in the van, named as Anton Palic, 51; Franjo Papp, 56; and Roko Ivanovic, 55.

All three suffered only minor injuries in the accident, but were taken to Thalang Hospital, then later transported to Bangkok Hospital Phuket in Phuket Town

Police made no mention of any injuries to the driver, Chaiyaphan Wichianchai.

Mr Chaiyaphan told police that he had picked up the tourists in Patong. He was en route to drop them off at their hotel in Mai Khao when the accident happened.

There had been some rain which had made  the road slippery, and he lost control of the van on the curve, resulting in the van slamming into the power pole beside the road, Mr Chaiyaphan said.

Police noted they were continuing their investigation into the accident.
