Phuket City Police issued the notice yesterday (Jan 30) after a video showing a foreign tourist using a brick to break a lock on a chain placed on a wheel of a motorbike parked illegally spread across local social media channels.

The video gained widespread attention among local residents, with many posting comments criticising the tourist’s behaviour.

Phuket City Police explained that the incident happened about 5:30pm on Jan 23. The location of the incident was not reported.

A “good citizen” reported the incident to police, but traffic police officers were busy dealing with rush hour at that time, the notice explained.

Traffic police later tracked down the tourist and summoned him to present himself at Phuket City Police Station the next day (Jan 24).

The tourist was fined for the infringements and the matter was closed, the notice said.

The tourist apologised and said he felt sorry for the incident, and said that he would not do it again, the notice added.

Phuket City Police urged all motorists to obey the traffic laws, including parking regulations, or else face being fined

The incident comes while traffic police in key areas of the island, namely Phuket Town and Patong, continue their campaign against illegal parking.
