Thunderstorm warning as palm tree falls on car

PHUKET: Phuket motorists are urged to beware driving during thunderstorms after strong winds felled a palm tree onto a passing car on Thepkrasattri Rd yesterday evening (May 15).

Thalang Police were alerted to the incident at about 6pm.

Police and rescue workers arrived at the scene, on Thepkrasattri Rd opposite the Thalang branch of the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA Thalang) in Srisoonthorn, to find a white Phuket-registered Suzuki car with heavy damage to its roof.

The car had also sustained damage to its front from a collision with another vehicle amid the accident.

The driver of the car, identified as Philippines national Mary Grace Vedasto Singh, had suffered injuries in the incident, She was taken to Thalang Hospital, though the extent of her injuries were not reported.

The incident caused long traffic delays on Thepkrasattri Rd while local municipality workers cleared the tree from the road.

The Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) has issued a weather advisory warning of flash floods in all three districts in Phuket, and in risk areas everywhere else throughout the country, in the coming week.

Pertaining to the Phuket area, the weather warning comes amid a strong air pressure area forming on the Andaman Sea.  The weather warning is marked to be in effect from May 18-25.
