The event was announced at a press conference last week inside Thanyapura's sports complex which saw several honoured guests, including Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong, Thanyapura Executive Chairman and Ironman legend Chris McCormack, as well as several other local and national officials.
Thousands of athletes from all over the world are expected to line up for the 6am start on Sunday, March 22.
The race evokes track and field's earlierst days in ancient Greece, when Olympians contested races measured in feet and miles (the original marathon was race 26 miles and 385 yards), and gives runners a change to register a personal best over another distance. Thanyapura's state-of-the-art technology means runners will be able to check their times on race day around 5pm on supersports.co.th, goadventureasia.com, thanyapura.com or sportstats.asia.
The event will be raced over four distances: 10 mile (6km), 5 miles (8km), 2 miles (3.2km) and 500 metres for kids aged 4–12. The 10-miles event will be divided between men and women as well as age group: 15–29 years, 30–39 years, 40–49 years, 50–59 years and over 60.
For international racers, the first, second and third-placed runners receive cash prizes of B20,000, B10,000 and B5,000 respectively.
Thai runners who place first, second and third get cash prizes of B10,000, B7,000 and B 3,000 respectively. First to fifth placed runners in each group receive a trophy.
Thanyapura and Supersports members receive a B100 discount on the entry fee for each race type and shirts will be given to the first B1,500 registered runners. Race entry fee is B500 for the 10 mile, B400 for the 5 mile and 2 mile. The 500m kids race is B300 to register.
Interested runners can register up to March 13 at Thanyapura.com. Pick up for for running bib, time-chip and shirt takes place on March 21 at Thanyapura from 10am to 6pm.
