The bilateral security conference, being held at the Patong Resort Hotel, began on Tuesday and concludes today (Aug 17).

The conference is the 113th Thai-Malaysia Regional Border Committee (RBC Meeting) held, with the previous meeting held in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia, in February this year.

The eternal goal of the bilateral talks, held twice each year, is “to strengthen relations and promote cooperation and close coordination to promote and support maintaining sustainable peace and stability along the Thai-Malaysian border”, said an official report of the meeting.

Six working groups are meeting during the conference, namely: 1) Psychological Intelligence and Operations Working Group (IWG); 2) Land Working Group (LWG); 3) Maritime Working Group (CMWG); 4) Air Working Group (AWG); 5) Border Management Working Group (BMWG); and 6) Disaster Management Working Group (DMWG).

The working groups are reviewing the projects currently underway, including operational activities across the border, training on cooperation in border management and disaster management, including economic and social activities, said the report.

At the same time, the progress of various activities have helped to create understanding, friendship and cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia, the report added.

“It [the conference] will also help resolve sensitive issues and open up new perspectives between the two countries to address border security issues and extend further to counter economic and social development,” the report said.

However, no specific details or outcomes of the meeting have been reported so far.

The 114th RBC meeting will be hosted by Malaysia in the first half of 2024.
