Thai stocks skyrocket after clear Bhumjaithai victory

BANGKOK: The Stock Exchange of Thailand Index jumped more than 3% on Monday (Feb 9) after  election results showed the Bhumjaithai Party was in command in forming a new coalition government.

The SEC Index had risen 40.74 points, or 3.01%, at 10.13am in trade worth almost B30 billion, reports the Bangkok Post.

Airports of Thailand Plc led the pack, up B5.75 (+10.85%) to B58.75, followed by Delta Electronics Plc, which gained B13 (+6.28%) to B220, and Gulf Development Plc, increasing B3.25 (+6.38%) to B53.

Rounding up the top five early winners after the market opened was Krungthaibank Plc, PTT Plc and Cpall Plc.

The Thai index closed at 1,354.01 on Friday (Feb 6).

Kavee Chukitkasem, head of Research and Content at Pi Securities, said in the company’s YouTube channel on Friday he expected the SET Index to rise after all political uncertainties were clear after the Sunday poll.

Some analysts and strategists told Bloomberg the stock market would be one of the sectors to benefit from the decisive victory of Bhumjaithai.

Kaseedit Choonnawat, an analyst at Citigroup said the Thai bourse could rise to 1,450 by year-end, it added.

Bhumjaithai is expected to win close to 200 out of the 500-member parliament. It has already won at least 174 House constituency MPs, according to the Election Commission.
