Kittipoom Mamak, 37, was arrested at a hotel located in a small alley off Phra Mettha Rd in Patong. Officers seized from the suspect a Beretta handgun and 14 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
According to Khao Phuket, The Phuket News’ sister newspaper in Thai language, police officers were summoned to the undisclosed hotel to resolve a situation described as "an intoxicated Thai man detaining a Russian woman in a hotel room and threatening to shoot her with a gun if she attempted to leave."
The report does not specify when Patong Police were alerted to the situation. Pictures from the scene, posted by Patong Police on Facebook at 10.11am, do not give any clues about the duration of the standoff if there was any.
As per the report, at 6.30am, the suspect, later identified as Mr Kittipoom, allowed the woman to leave the room. At 6.45am, police officers, led by Capt Teerachai Husso, entered the room, arrested Mr Kittipoom, and confiscated his handgun which turned out to be a golden-bronze Beretta pistol.
The Samut Prakan native was then taken to Patong Police Station and charged with "carrying a firearm and ammunition illegally in a town or village."
It is understood that further charges may follow as Patong Police proceed with the investigation. The name of the Russian woman has not been disclosed.
