Gen Prawit told reporters on Friday (Sept 25) that he ordered security agencies to intensify surveillance along the Thai-Malaysian border, as the arrests of suspects allegedly linked with the Islamic State group preceded the warnings.
“We are contacting our neighbour, Malaysia, because there have been such movements for a long period. We are monitoring developments and taking precautions,” Gen Prawit said.
He also said that the US had not issued any warning about Thailand since two bomb explosions in Bangkok in mid-August. The Bangkok blasts had nothing to do with any IS group, Gen Prawit asserted.
The security boost followed the US embassy on Thursday (Sept 24) warning its citizens to avoid the tourist-popular Jalan Alor eatery street in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, saying that the warning was based “credible threat information regarding a potential terrorist act.”
The Australian embassy also advised Australians to reconsider the need to travel to the eastern coastal region of the Malaysian state Sabah, on the island of Borneo.
