Thalang Police confirmed that the man* was pronounced dead at Thalang Hospital at 6:51pm, following injuries sustained in the collision.
According to the police report, investigators from Thalang Police Station were notified by Thalang Hospital at 7:40pm that a foreign national had died after being admitted for emergency treatment.
Initial investigations found that the man had been travelling from Krabi Province with his wife, also a Swedish national. The couple were scheduled to return to Sweden today (Jan 23).
At about 5:47pm, the couple were crossing the road in front of a PTT petrol station near the main intersection with Route 4026, south of the airport, when the man was struck by a car. Rescue personnel were notified and transported him to Thalang Hospital, the report said.
The police report did not elaborate on the type of vehicle ‒ taxi, van or private ‒ that struck the Swedish man.
Police noted that the man had no pulse during transport and required defibrillation. He arrived at the hospital at 6:19pm, where doctors attempted resuscitation efforts but were unsuccessful.
An initial examination at the scene found abrasions to the right rib area, both hands and the face, with no visible broken bones or deformities. Hospital doctors later said the preliminary cause of death was determined to be severe injuries resulting from a serious road accident.
Thalang Police Chief Pol Col Nikorn Chuthong confirmed that Sakhu Police Station has been notified and will handle further proceedings related to the incident scene.
The Swedish Embassy, Immigration and other relevant authorities will also be informed, he said.
The body is currently being kept at Thalang Hospital pending arrangements by relatives and embassy officials.
Police said investigations into the circumstances of the collision are ongoing.
Sakhu Police Chief Pol Col Salan Santisasanakul told The Phuket News today (Jan 23), “The vehicle involved was not a taxi, and not an app taxi. It was private car driven by a Thai man, 34 years old.”
Pol Col Salan declined to name the driver. However, he confirmed that the driver had been charged with negligence causing death.
“As soon as the accident occurred, the driver stopped immediately and provided assistance to the Swedish man, including providing CPR to him until an ambulance arrived,” Pol Col Salan said.
