The victim, identified by a passport found in the room, was named as Mr Nathan House, 26, of the US.
An apparent suicide note found in the room contained clear instructions for how to use the cash, one of the biggest portions asked to be given to "police and/or hospital to cover the cost of their investigation (if any)".
Though it seems like a clear cut case of suicide, The Phuket News highlights two oddities that should be noted in the investigation, if any, as follows:
The note was signed by the same name listed in the passport but oddly the date was signed of 4/3/16 (March 4, 2016), which is not the typical way most Americans are trained to sign letters, who typically sign the number of the month before the day, i.e. 3/4/16.
The second oddity is that he left 615 Euros (about B24, 000) for the purpose of cremating his body (see image), and it is not immediately clear of why an American would be carrying that much Euros in Thailand.
Nonetheless, authorities are in the process of confirming the cause of death and notifying the embassy.
