Srisoonthorn half marathon a big success

MARATHON: The third annual Srisoonthorn Half Marathon took place yesterday (Feb 15) with over 1,500 athletes lacing up their running shoes and taking part.

The course, which was split into four separate race categories of a 3.5 kilometre ‘walk for health’, a 5km fun run, a 10km mini marathon, and the 21km half marathon, took participants around Ban Bang Niew Dam and the surrounding areas in Thalang.

Race organisers explained that a total of 1,559 people took part in the separate race categories, relfecting the popularity of the occasion: 260 in the 3.5km ‘walk for health’; 580 in the 5kn fun run; 446 in the mini marathon; and 273 in the 21km half marathon 21 km with 273 participants.

Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn presided over the opening ceremony at the start line and was joined by: Chimbol Kitsap, the mayor of Srisoonthorn; Lalita Maneesri, the mayor of Patong; as well as selected municipal council members, government officials and race organsiers.

As part of his opening address Governor Nirat extended his appreciation to all participating athletes and the organisers of the event, highlighting the importance of exercise in helping people develop their physical and mental health, while instilling the values of good sportsmanship.

He further explained how the event strengthens discipline and unity in the local community, while helping boost sports tourism and the local economy.

Mr Chimbol explained how the race is oragnised to encourage people to pay attention to their health by adopting a more active and healthy lifestyle.

The event was also a great way to promote Phuket as an ideal sports tourism destination, Mr Chimbol added, citing that many participants from numerous countries took part.
