Speeding car flips on Patong road after smashing into back of parked taxi, unhurt driver suspected of drink-driving

PHUKET: Police have cited excessive speed as the likely cause of an accident in which a car flipped over after smashing into a parked taxi in the early hours of this morning in Patong.

Luckily, no one was injured in the accident, which occurred on Phra Baramee Rd, in front of Wat Suvarnakeereewong School.

Pol Major Yingyong Chuaikit of Patong Police was alerted to the accident at 3.15am and joined rescue workers to the scene, where they found a black Honda Civic with Phuket plates, flipped over in the middle of the road.

About 30 metres away, there was a greyish bronzed coloured Toyota Altis with green taxi plates, which was smashed up on its rear side.

Police questioned the owner of the taxi, Mr Metee Sontem, 22, who told them that the he had parked his car on the side of the road the previous night before retiring to bed at a residence nearby.

“Mr Metee said he had been awoken by a loud sound and came out to inspect,” said Maj Yingyong.

The driver of the flipped Honda Civic, named as 28-year-old Mr Chadchai Ubonlong, was also questioned by police after miraculously crawling out from his car without any noticeable injury.

“We believe he had been speeding, and will be testing his alcohol blood level too,” concluded Maj Yingyong.
