At 8:30pm, Kathu police were called to a hotel on Prabaramee Rd in Patong where a man had been found dead in his fifth floor room.

Kathu police and Kusoldharm rescue workers arrived at the hotel and were led to the room where the naked body of the man (name withheld until his family have been informed) was lying face down in the bathroom near the toilet.

Police said that there appeared to be no sign of foul play, breakin or assault. However, the man had suffered a small head injury which police believe was caused by the fall.

The man had been dead for around five hours when police arrived.

Police were told that the victim checked in to the hotel on April 28 and due to check out yesterday (May 6). He was staying at the hotel alone.

On Tuesday, after noticing that the man had not left his room all day, staff from the hotel decided to go and check on him. They knocked on the door but there was no response. Staff opened the door and found the man̕s body. They immediately called police.

Police believe that whilst using the toilet the man passed out and fell face down on the floor.

The body of the man was taken to Patong Hospital where an autopsy will take place to find the exact cause of the death.

Police have contacted the South African embassy so that they can contact the man̕s family.
