Pol Gen Boonchan Nuansai, head of the Senate Law and Justice Committee, chaired a meeting on Thursday (Apr 2) at the old provincial hall on Narisorn Rd in Phuket Town, which now serves as the main offices of the PPAO, to discuss key issues.
Attendees included Vice Governor Teeraphong Chuaychoo, Phuket Deputy Governor, along with senior officials from government departments and relevant agencies.
The visit formed part of the committee’s study tour to assess crime linked to illegal business activities on the island and to exchange views with local authorities on enforcement challenges and policy responses.
Key concerns raised during discussions included the prevalence of illegal foreign-run businesses, the use of Thai nominees to circumvent ownership laws, and the employment of illegal migrant workers. Officials reviewed current preventative and suppression measures, as well as obstacles hindering effective enforcement.
Tourist safety was also high on the agenda, with the committee and local officials discussing ways to strengthen security measures and bolster visitor confidence in Phuket as a safe destination.
Vice Governor Teeraphong told the meeting that Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn has prioritised integrated cooperation among agencies, with a focus on improving coordination and data-sharing to address complex issues more effectively.
An official report of the meeting noted that the meeting provided a key forum for consolidating input from all sectors, with the aim of developing concrete strategies to tackle illegal activities and enhance public safety.
The official report also noted that Phuket authorities reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring Phuket remains a secure and attractive destination for international travellers, with further measures expected to be refined following the committee’s findings.
No further details of the meeting were reported.
