Phuket City Police received the report at 9:50pm and arrived at the scene to find a white Toyota Veloz, registered in Phuket, severely damaged by flames.
The car was parked on the roadside in front of the 7-Eleven store, on Thepkrasattri Rd northbound in Moo 2, Koh Kaew.
The vehicle’s owner, Wipha Sae Tao, 45, told police she had parked the car only minutes before the incident. About five minutes later, a passerby alerted her that smoke was coming from under the hood.
“When I went to look, flames were already coming from the front of the car and spreading inside,” Ms Wipha said.
A fire truck was dispatched to the scene and quickly brought the blaze under control. No injuries were reported.
Investigators have taken the vehicle to Phuket City Police Station for examination by Phuket Forensic Science officers to determine the cause of the fire.
The incident comes just 10 days after a foreign man narrowly escaped another car fire that destroyed his Ford sedan on Wiset Rd in Rawai late on Oct 9.
In that case, Rawai Municipality firefighters took about 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze. The driver suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Bangkok Hospital Phuket for treatment.
Police have not linked the two incidents but said both cases remain under investigation to confirm their causes.
