Search continues for ’Russian’ man missing off Nai Yang

PHUKET: Search teams are continuing their efforts to search the waters along Phuket’s west coast for a young Russian-speaking man who went missing at Nai Yang Beach yesterday (Sept 1). The missing man has been identified as Dmitriy Rochsha, an 18-year-old national of Kazakhstan. Initially, he was reported as a ’missing Russian’.

The search for Mr Rochsha was launched last night after Sakhu Police Station was notified of a young man who disappeared in the sea and possibly drowned around 7.30pm.

Police officers arrived at the scene and met with several friends of Mr Rochsha, including Anna Shatrova, a 17-year-old national of Kazakhstan. Police have not revealed the connection between Mr Rochsha and Ms Shatrova, but only the two of them were mentioned by name in the reports.

The search effort, involving Kusoldharm rescue workers, continued until 8.30pm on Sept 1. The operation was then halted due to darkness and adverse weather conditions.

The search was resumed today in the morning (Sept 2), but the stormy weather limited the possibilities for the rescue workers. As of 5pm, there have not been any reports of results.

It has been confirmed that Mr Rochsha disappeared while swimming in the sea. The man entered the surf consciously rather than being washed away from the shore by a strong wave.
