Sandy Rivera can lay claim to one of the finest house records of all time, ‘Finally’, penned under his Kings Of Tomorrow moniker in 2002. The talented DJ/producers journey, however, started long before then, in Spanish Harlem, New York, where he started DJing at the age of 13.
He began producing hip hop records in 1992, learning the piano to give himself a better understanding of music and how tunes were constructed, less than a decade later he would produce a tune that would connect people all over the world.
From the instantly recognizable bassline to the seminal words, ‘Finally’ defined a generation of house music lovers, even now it has the power to transport us to a specific time and place.
The late nineties saw Sandy deliver his first long player, ‘Calling’, which actually featured him on vocals. It was a tie when house music was still underground, where intimate venues were packed with discerning music lovers and where a special few DJs held court. The album made an instant impact, putting the talented Puerto Rican on radars all over the globe.
The house community was a small one and news of the breakthrough talent spread like wild fire. The follow up album took that early promise and evolved into a long player that would include ‘Finally’ and ‘Young Hearts’, featuring the stunning vocals of Julie McKnight, a collaboration that would etch Sandy Rivera’s name forever in the annals of house music history.
International acclaim followed and around the world touring began and has never stopped since. The man with the striking Afro was the hottest ticket, selling out venues wherever he played. 2005 saw his third album, ‘Trouble’, aptly named as the talented DJ/ producer had an ability to get himself into sticky situations.
The album cemented his place at house music’s top table and as the scene grew throughout the world, more and more people became aware of this talent. Sandy Rivera continued to produce, launching his own label, Blackwiz, which provided a vehicle for underground talent.
More recently he has reverted to Kings Of Tomorrow to deliver ‘Take Me Back’ and ‘I Need To Love Me’, harking back to the halcyon days when vocal house was fresh out of the wrapper and dancefloors the world over were mesmerized by its power.
Saturday March 9 sees Sandy Rivera drop into Xana Beach Club with Attica as part of an extensive Asian tour.
As part of the recently launched Pool Party concept, which sees Xana with Attica offer a day into night party experience, local DJs will start the build up from 15.00, with a beach barbecue and kids activities on the beach complementing the cool beats from the brand new DJ booth.
