Pol Col Pichit Deeya, chief of Khao Suan Kwang police, said the team found the vehicle was powered by a 2400cc petrol engine. Previously, Provincial Police Region 4 deputy commander Chareonwit Sriwanich said the two sightseeing buses were battery powered.
Pol Col Pichit said an inspection of the vehicle's acceleration system found the accelerator stuck as claimed and was heavily rusted.
"The rusted accelerator cable may have caused the accelerator pedal to get stuck. And this may have been the cause of the accident," Pol Col Pichit.
However, Pol Col Pichit said conclusions about what really caused the accident would be made after a thorough inspection of the vehicle.
The officers had not examined the cart's brake system yet as the engine would not start, the officer added.
Taewin Rattanawongsawat, director of Khon Kaen Zoo, said on Monday (July 6) that there were 10 open-seat carts at the zoo offering tour services everyday from 8am-6pm. All vehicles were inspected for safety every hour and re-examined again before each trip.
Police have charged driver Surachai Lertmai, 38, with reckless driving causing injuries and death.
