Police examine the room where the Russian was found dead.

Examining the body - identified as that of a 32-year-old Russian from the Siberian city of Yakutsk - Pol Lt Col Teerasak Boonsang and forensics officers found the victim had deep gashes on both arms and seven stab wounds in the chest.

Police concluded that he committed suicide.

Friends of the victim said he checked into the hotel on July 19 and was due to check out today to fly back to Russia.

“We gathered in front of the hotel this morning to take the shuttle bus and when he didn’t show up, we asked hotel staff to check his room,” one said.

A member of the hotel staff said, “The last time we saw him was at breakfast on Monday (August 11) and there has been a ‘Do not disturb’ sign on the door since yesterday.”

Police are still collecting evidence, and have been in touch with the Russian Embassy to discuss the case. The dead man is not being named until there has been a chance for his family to be informed.

Having said that, I left Phuket mostly because of the behavior of Russian tourists. They're complete and utter dirtbags to the locals, even worse than the bulk of other tourists...at least most of the Russian I've met are.
I saw a huge Russian dude embrace a random Thai girl (read: NOT a hooker!) trying to pull her along. When she struggled, he just laughed and kept going. Until one of the local street food vendors came over that is.
Once that happened, he pushed the Thai dude to the floor and spat on him. It was the last thing he did that night.
I Thai box myself, but the way that tiny street food vendor dealt with that Russian giant was impressive. The fight lasted less than 30sec and by the end, the Russian dude was out cold bleeding on the floor. 2 of his mates arrived just as he went down, but none of them dared to touch the Thai guy. They ran away when the cops arrived, which was quite funny to watch.
Not surprised the cops cover stuff up either...they're all corrupt in Thailand. I spent 8 weeks in Thailand last year and ended up bribing tons of cops. Was always funny how little work they did during the month, but at the end of the month, they pulled you over for everything because they get a commission and need to hit targets. So smoking weed openly was fine until the last week of the month, after that, you had to bribe your way out.
In short: Wouldn't be surprised if that guy was killed (by locals), which is obviously bad. Having said that, I also wouldn't be surprised if he provoked this in the first place.

Maybe, just maybe the wounds on his arms were sustained in an attempt to defend himself from a knife attacker who then succeeded.
Seven stab wounds in the chest and the police conclude suicide!

"Pol Lt Col Teerasak Boonsang and forensics officers found the victim had deep gashes on both arms and seven stab wounds in the chest."

I may not believe what said the forensic police with 7 stab wounds and deep gashes in extra..... that death looks more like a crime disguised in suicide.
