The arrest was carried out on Saturday (Apr 4) as part of a nationwide crackdown ordered by Tourist Police Bureau Commander Pol Lt Gen Saksira Puek-am, targeting foreigners unlawfully working in Thailand and taking jobs reserved for Thai nationals, particularly ahead of the upcoming Songkran festival.

According to police, the suspect had entered Thailand on a DTV visa, which permits stays of up to 180 days per visit but strictly prohibits employment in violation of Thai labour laws.

Officers said the investigation revealed the man had been conducting tour operations for Russian-speaking clients. Evidence seized at the time of arrest included a tour itinerary written in Russian, which authorities say confirmed his involvement in organising and leading tours.

He now faces three charges: operating a tour business without a licence under the Tourist Business and Tour Guide Act; acting as an unlicensed tour guide; and working as a foreign national without a valid work permit in breach of the Alien Employment Management Act.

The suspect, not named by police, has been handed over to investigators for legal proceedings. Authorities have also proposed revoking his visa and deporting him from Thailand.

Tourist Police reiterated that inspections and enforcement actions will continue across Phuket to protect the local workforce and maintain confidence in the island’s tourism industry during the peak holiday period.
