Police were notified of the accident at 11:45pm.

“We were called to Soi Samakkee 4, off Sai Yuan Rd, where a Toyota Yaris had collided with a Honda Click motorbike,” explained Lt Chanat Hongsitchaikul of the Chalong Police.

The impact left the motorbike driver, Narong Jarat, 44, unconscious with head injuries. He was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket Town for treatment.

The Toyota driver, named by police as Russian national Ruslan Gainutdinov, 37, was unharmed in the collision.

“Hospital staff notified us at 10am this morning (Apr 15) that Mr Narong had died from injuries sustained in the accident,” Lt Chanat told The Phuket News today.

Mr Ruslan admitted to driving down the wrong side of the street, Lt Chanat said

“Other drivers on the street at the time also confirmed this,” he added.

“We breath-tested Mr Ruslan for alcohol, but he tested negative. We have asked doctors to conduct a blood test on Mr Narong for alcohol. We have yet to get those results back,” Lt Chanat noted.

Mr Narong was the second person killed on Phuket’s roads since authorities launched Seven Days of Danger road-safety campaign for Songkran on Monday (Apr 11).
