CORRECTION: The mother, Elena Nikolaeva, survived her throat being cut with the knife. She is reported to be in serious condition, but no further details of her condition have been released. The error in reporting is sincerely regretted.
Original story is as follows:
Police were alerted to the incident when Pol Lt Col Phongpipat Khamchomphu of the Thalang Police received a report from the village headman of Moo 2, Thepkrasattri, at about 5:15pm.
Police and rescue workers arrived at the home to find the Russian national Elena Nikolaeva, 46, on the floor with severe cut across her throat. Unable to stem the flow of blood, rescue workers rushed her to Thalang Hospital, then on to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket Town.
Forensic police began investigating the house while all police stations on the island were notified to be on the lookout for her son, Aleksandr, 18, last seen fleeing the home in a grey Nissan Almera.
At about 9pm last night, officers found Aleksandr sitting in the a grey Nissan Almera parked in front of Phuket City Police Station.
Officers took Aleksandr inside, where through a written note he confessed to cutting his mother’s throat with a knife.
Aleksandr at this stage has been charged with ‘attempted murder’, despite his actions resulting in his mother’s death.
He is believed to be mentally ill and is receiving psychiatric help.
A Russian translator has been provided, but he has so far refused to speak with officers further about the incident.
