Last year's rubber duck race kicks off at Laguna.

Last year's rubber duck race kicks off at Laguna.

The Phuket Community Foundation is holding its 4th annual charity rubber duck race at Laguna’s Latitude marquee on March 3, noon till 6:30 pm.

The day will have many activities for the whole family, including Stand Up Paddle Board races, Mini Golf Putting, BIS Face Painting, Nail Painting, Bouncy Castle, Races for the little ones and many more activities.

There will be a variety of food and drink outlets as well as a Rubber Duckie Cocktail Competition.

The winner of the Great Phuket Rubber Duck Race Quiz will be announced at the event and his/her 10 ducks will race with the “Quackers”.

The Quiz is currently running every week in the Time Out page of The Phuket News. Points will be accumulated over the four weeks leading up to the event to determine who gets the free racing ducks.

A new addition to the event this year will be a Youth Talent Competition, organised by Legend Music and Siobhan’s Music Studios. The winner will receive B5,000 and a recording session by Legend Music Studio. There will be second and third prizes for the runners-up.

Entertainment will also be provided by the winners of last year’s Battle of the Youth Bands, Legends of Siam, who are rapidly becoming legendary around Phuket.

The highlight of the day will be the Great Phuket Rubber Duck Race, when about 2,000 bright yellow rubber ducks will be released into the Dusit Canal to embark on the race of their lives.

After the prize giving, cocktails and mocktails can be enjoyed while budding entertainers can take home a karaoke video of their own performance.

Proceeds from the event will go towards the Phuket Community Foundation’s many projects and small grant programme to improve the quality of life for everyone on Phuket. The Phuket News and Live 89.5 are media sponsors of this event.

Major projects include:

Road Safety – Motorcycle Back Light Replacement. One in four motorbikes are without a working rear light. Anyone who has driven on a dark Phuket road at night will know the heart-stopping experience of having a motorcycle with no rear light suddenly appear in front.

In this continuing campaign, the PCF replaces back light bulbs for free and educates people about checking their rear lights for safety.

Toy Libraries: Toys are an important element in developing children’s imaginations and their social skills. Yet many families on the island simply cannot afford them nor do they have space in a home with only one room for living and sleeping.

The toy libraries provide a dual purpose: a clean and colourful playing environment with friends and other children, and the opportunity to borrow a cherished toy to take home for a while.

Small Grants: Most grants are to local community initiatives to provide work and incomes for village people.

Scholarships for Medical Students: Three Medical Students have graduated after a six-year course. One more student will graduate this year. More than B2.5 million was donated for these scholarships.

Thailand has a shortage of qualified medical doctors, especially in rural areas. These students have spent much of their courses practicing in rural hospitals gaining “hands on” experience.

Books for School Libraries: Many Thai schools have very few English language books on their shelves. The PCF has collected books through Rotary in the USA and also a Lions Club in Penang to enrich school libraries for all ages from kindergarten through school and university, even medical school.
