The warning comes after the staffer was fooled by one customer, and had the outstanding payment deducted from her day’s wages.
The staffer, ‘Nong Lin’, said the incident happened about 11am on May 23. A group of people came into the restaurant, Cafe Dim Sum Phuket near the Clocktower Circle (Surin Circle), in the heart of Phuket Town.
The group sat down and ate for about 20 minutes, then got up to leave quickly with one person staying behind to pay the bill. The woman appeared to be in a hurry and asked to pay the bill while seeming to be on a phone call ‒ and while waiting for leftovers to be wrapped up for takeaway.
The woman scanned the QR code for payment. However, the transaction was not completed as the woman did not confirm the transfer before leaving the restaurant, Nong Lin explained.
It was only later that staff at the restaurant realised that the payment had not gone through.
Nong Lin told reporters yesterday (May 27) that this was the first time this had happened to her. She posted her experience online as a warning to others, she said. Her post received much attention and comments made by local residents.
Regardless, Nong Lin said she was still held accountable for the B285 left unpaid by the customers.
Reporters who visited the restaurant yesterday were told that the restaurant was reviewing its payment procedures to prevent further such incidents from happening.
